Buy cigars by Hoyo de Monterrey
José Gener, a Spanish immigrant from Tarragona, had the right nose in 1860! He was one of those who recognized the unique quality of the tobacco leaves around the small town of San Luis y Martínez in the privileged vegetation of the now protected origin growing region of Vuelta Abajo. The filler and wrapper leaves appealed to him for his brand Hoyo de Monterrey, named after the depression where the plantations extend to the banks of the river San Juan y Martínez - the Monterrey depression. The pioneer Gener not only named the whole plantation Hoyo de Monterrey, but also, from 1865, his best brand of habano, which still exists today. The plantation, with its administrative buildings and manufactory, is located in the middle of the tobacco town of San Luis y Martínez - it is one of the few Vegas de Primera where only the best leaves grow, some of which are also used for cohibas. The entrance to the plantation is decorated by an imposing gate with the inscription "Hoyo de Monterrey. José Gener. 1860“. It has made a name for itself around the world, especially among lovers of Habanos who prefer a light taste while demanding high aroma and complexity. With its fine blend, it is equally popular with discerning beginners.

The „Monterrey Valley“ is one of the best growing regions in Cuba, and the eponymous brand has always named formats after the specific sites. Like this tiny „Entreacto“, a traditional format that should not be underestimated. Cuba enjoyment for about 25 – 30 minutes!
Aromas
Despite the very small diameter, which often ensures a concentrated aroma, the fine cig has a rather sweet flavour. It convinces with intense fermentation, which never subsides towards the end, and the typical flavour facets of light Habanos with bright wrapper leaves, (milk) coffee, white bread, cornflakes, cedar wood. Mild and mellow, with spicy notes, the „Maire“ is extremely easy to start and a cigar for really every occasion.

Among the many Habanos of the young millennium that cater to the trend for short, fat cigars, this little Hoyo is justifiably one of the most popular. 40 – 55 minutes of unadulterated pleasure!
Aromas
Immediately upon ignition, this little one unfolds an astonishing opulence. Creamy sweetness, as if from Christmas cookies, permeates the mouth, and even the typical woody notes come across as unusually sweet. Soft Röst flavours develop, along with a hint of vanilla and caffé latte. The mega-harmonious taste remains consistent over the entire smoking time. One of the best and most reliable Habanos! The maturation potential is amazing; within a short time, the spice aroma increases enormously in diversity

Always hand-rolled, always available only in a tubo – this HdM classic has long enjoyed great popularity with all fans of the brand and offers 35 – 50 minutes of light, uncomplicated enjoyment.
Flavours
A wonderfully smooth, mild and balanced Habano that beautifully represents the classic character of the brand. This is described by some aficionados as „Cohiba light“ – quite respectfully! – describes it. Not to be dismissed out of hand – certain parallels are present, such as the transition from „summery“-fragrant, sweet notes to more coffee (here: latte) and nut aromas with umami character and fine toasty notes. Hardly any Habano is better suited for beginners and occasional cigar smokers than this light Mareva – and not only because of the practical tube!

After all, they still exist from four brands, the also „Prominentes“ called giants among the Cuban Coronas. HdM's is certainly the lightest and mildest of them, making it perfect as the first DC in an aficionado's life– but „old hands“ also love the blend of this classic.
Flavours
Not only the biggest, but certainly one of the most opulent and complex Hoyo. Here you are literally bathing in flavour, because this Habano is characterised by intense, flattering sweetness, which makes you think of croissants, sipped cappuccino, even Christmas cookies. The sloppy smoke consistency goes with it just as well as the hard-to-compare hearty, spicy tastes, which are also present and somewhat reminiscent of the cult brand Sancho Panza; tanned nuts and expensive leather. Towards the end, there is also a hint of cocoa on the palate, the intensity increases a little, but the strength always remains moderate.

Originally released as a special edition, this great cigar went into production in 2008. The format designation „Gordito“ („Fatty“) is somewhat misleading, as it is by no means thicker, but quite a bit longer than a normal Robusto. Smoking time approx. 70 – 85 minutes.
Flavours
This „Epi“ is the ideal „compromise cigar“ of the series in terms of flavour. Located between No.1 and No.2 in terms of both aroma and (moderate) strength, it combines the typical HdM blend of cappuccino and light nuts with a subtle cedar note and the satisfying flavour of white bread or cereals. Floral hay scent makes you think of a summer meadow, and the very good Habano becomes only slightly stronger in the course of smoking, but a little toastier and fuller-bodied. A prime example of the virtues of relatively light and mild Cuban tobacco!

The „Epicure“series is one of HdM's classics. Previously quite „naked“, these cigars have even proudly worn 2 anillas since 2008. The „No. 1“ in the timelessly beautiful „Corona Gorda“ format, which aficionados hold in very high regard, is probably the strongest „Epi“. It burns for about 70 – 90 minutes.
Aromas
HdM in highly concentrated form! Like many Coronas Gordas, this one is quite an intense treat - not so much in terms of strength (it never exceeds the medium range) but in terms of intensity, being one of the hoyos with the fullest body. The classic brand aromas are easy to taste, but everything seems a little darker and deeper here: mocha rather than latte, more tropical than cedar wood, spice instead of white bread come to mind as associations. Typical of HdM, however, are the clear sweetness and the slightly Cohiba-like hay note.

The classic Robusto, probably the most popular cigar format today, is of course also represented in the HdM range. The „Epi 2“ with its light, well-balanced tobacco blend offers a perfect introduction to the world of medium Habanos formats. Smoking time approx. 55 – 70 minutes.
Flavours
Creamy, mildly spicy, honeyed, with wonderfully gentle almond and cappuccino flavours, this is how this lovable cigar presents itself, with great smoke development and uncomplicated burning as well as with discreet spicy flavours and a fine underlying cocoa note in the later course of smoking. Due to the rapid maturation typical of the brand, the subtleties of the blend come to the fore unusually early. A masterpiece of balance, ideal for beginners, hot summer days or the early morning!

The Cubans haven't exactly overtaken themselves recently with the introduction of regular vítolas. So it's all the more pleasing that another stroke of genius is finally coming our way! Similar in size to HU's "Magnum 54", this torpedo offers approx. 50 - 60 minutes of light Habanos enjoyment.
Flavour
Unmistakably an offspring of the much sought-after "Epicure" line, the newbie charms us with the usual harmonious HdM flavour profile full of fragrant summer meadow aromas and caffé latte creaminess, but also a wealth of sweet roasted aromas between almond kernels and cornflakes. The floral elegance and the honey note never completely disappear from the spectrum, but over time - this is where the concentrated flow of smoke from the pointed head becomes noticeable - they give way to increasingly intense, subtly bitter tropical wood notes, which increasingly become the determining factor. Beginner-friendly and classy!

In recent years, several exciting vítolas have been added to the HdM range. With its baroque dimensions, this thick 56 fits in well with the spirit of the times and fits seamlessly into the great portfolio in terms of taste. It burns for about 75 – 90 minutes.
Flavours
Whoever suspects a light, emphatically creamy and well-burning Habano behind a Hoyo of this thickness is right on the money. The cedar aroma typical of Kua is even more pronounced in this cigar than in the other HdMs, but otherwise it offers everything the popular brand has always stood for: a fine coffee aroma, mild aromas, pleasant sweetness and a great smoking consistency guarantee uncomplicated, full-bodied smoking pleasure to perfection. Not quite as varied as the big Coronas, it offers consistent flavour from puff to puff until you put it down.

Wissenswertes

This perennial favourite in the HdM portfolio has the length of a Minuto, yet a slender Lancero ring gauge. In the distant past, it was even delivered in giant boxes („Cajónes“) of 100 pieces because of the great demand, and it is still popular today. Smoking time approx. 30 – 40 minutes.
Flavours
The hollow „Depute“ apparently delivers relatively spicy tobacco, the format also plays a role here – in any case, the small format comes up to the mark with (for HdM proportions!) decent power and body. A distinctive, noble wood aroma is in the foreground; the brand-typical sweetness is rather restrained, but can definitely be tasted. Coffee aroma and toasty cereal taste provide a certain „Sunday brunch feeling“ and predestine the „Trabuco“ (engl. „Stutzen“, official format designation) to be the first cigar of the day!

Like so many Cuban small formats, this one was also produced by machine until 2002. Since then, the „Crema“ has shone with the fine aromas of the hand-rolled long filler and is certainly one of the most original Hoyos. A tip (not only) for connoisseurs! Smoking time approx. 40 – 55 minutes.
Flavours
Cremas are often characterised by strong aroma development, a nice evolution and comparatively great strength – so is this one. With quite medium power, it scores with manifold exotic wood aromas, discreet forest honey sweetness and an official portion of spiciness, which no other HdM has. As the smoke progresses, the pleasant aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans spreads, – more typical of the brand. Behind everything is a wonderful, cedary, spicy tobacco flavour. An indelible cigar!

Finally! Just in time for the height of summer 2023, HdM is also releasing a deadly chic light metal tin in a deadly chic retro design with 5 Petit Coronas that will transport you to the heart of Habana in no time at all for about three quarters of an hour. Perhaps the best little Hoyo!
Flavour
Like the other Marevas of the cross-brand retro line, these jewels are deliberately blended "conservatively", which means: they have noticeably more body and aromatic density to offer than the other newer creations from HdM, which are more trimmed for delicacy and sweetness. Nutty roasted aromas with a good hit of brittle sweetness, a distinctive cedar component and the gentle creaminess of capuccino combine to create a beguiling smoking experience of classic Cuban character; the teasing dose of cinnamon on the palate, which becomes clearer as the smoke progresses, fits perfectly. A little summer dream!
