Buy cigars by Jose L. Piedra
José L. Piedra is a particularly remarkable Habano, because the filler leaves are not only from the tobacco growing area of Remedios, but the cigars are totalmente a mano, tripa corta - completely handmade short filler. The Piedra family relocated to Cuba from the Spanish province of Asturias in the 1980s. They settled near the town of Santa Clara, located in the heart of the Remedios region, where tobacco has been grown since the 16th century. There they began to produce cigars. Known by his full name, José Lamadrid Piedra led the second generation, founded and developed the brand as we know it today.

Worth knowing
This cigar is not that short („breva“), rather it is a Petit Corona a few mm longer. With it, the great budget brand JLP offers about 30 – 40 minutes of uncomplicated, hefty smoking pleasure.
Flavours
Piedra cigars have quite „steam“ well, this one is rather on the milder side within the portfolio. It has the characteristic röstig-earthy flavour with a hint of mild pepper as well as a surprisingly fine leather scent and sweet-lovely intermediate notes. As is typical for the format, it becomes somewhat stronger and pleasantly harsher as the smoke progresses. Like all JLP.s, it gains more and more charm and sweetness as it matures, which is unusual for short fillers

Worth knowing
In2002, JLP switched from machine-made to hand-made, but it is still a short filler. This handsome smoke is the brand's flagship. „Cazadores“ („Jäger“) are usually quite strong – so is this one. 50 – 65 minutes smoking time.
Flavours
It's amazing the depth of flavour that the short leaf unfolds in the long format! The intense spiciness offers soft peatiness alongside lighter, spicy coffee aromas and spices; plus quite pronounced, beautiful leather notes. In the background, discreet fermentation is sometimes noticeable. The development is of course, as with all short fillers, quite linear. But the flavour becomes more concentrated puff by puff. All in all, a particularly hearty smoke, tending to be more for experienced smokers.

Worth knowing
Initiated in 1996, JLP processes tobacco not from the premium growing region of Vuelta Abajo, but from Vuelta Arriba in eastern Cuba. Even there, the harvests are of excellent quality. This unusual format can be enjoyed for about 40 – 50 minutes.
Flavours
The „Durable“ offers arguably the most balanced flavour experience in the JLP range. The classic coffee, brown bread, pepper and spice notes are complemented by almost caramel sweetness and an unexpectedly smooth, creamy feel. Unlike many other short fillers, these lovingly handmade cigars never become hot or boring in taste as they smoke. They hold their aromas until they are put down, and they gain more and more flavour through ageing!

Worth knowing
Only in 2020 did this latest prank of the lovable budget brand come into the shops. The format is a slightly slimmed-down Petit Robusto and thus more contemporary than the traditional formats. Smoking time approx. 40 – 50 minutes. Ideal for the entry into the Piedra portfolio!
Flavours
The lightest and most charming JLP, at the same time the one with the smoothest and most voluminous smoke. But above all, it offers the greatest variety of flavours. Whereas its sisters focus on savoury spices, earthy and R&O notes, the „little rider“ also offers a dark, malty flavour and noble, almost walnut-like tones. In this respect, it is the new star of the brand – there are many more expensive longfillers in the world that offer less complexity and flavour! Well-balanced right to the end.

Worth knowing
Until the launch of the brand new „Petit Caballeros“ this cigar, launched in 2007, was the youngest child in the house of Piedra. With a smoking time of about 25 – 30 minutes, it is the perfect companion for every break!
Flavours
No one will expect an exciting development or exuberant complexity from a short filler of this size. Its strengths lie in the wonderful concentration and groundedness of the flavour. A little more leathery and woody than its bigger sisters, the short one offers the same spicy flavour with impeccable smoking properties, underpinned with nice notes of smoke and tobacco. Harmonious, intense flavour at an unrivalled price!
